Founded and built on the Episcopal tradition of excellence in education...
For the past thirty years, St. Mary's Episcopal School has provided our community a loving, caring, Christian environment in which to educate young children while experiencing carefully planned steady growth. As we moved into the new Millennium, a major step was taken in the development of the school’s program. The challenge was to move forward to build upon the excellent reputation of St. Mary’s Episcopal School – and seize a bright future for our students. This has been accomplished through the complete relocation of our school to our 505 East Covell Campus. This project began with the acquisition of 51-acres of land, the completion of our Phase I building project and was completed during the spring of 2006 with our Phase II building project.
To provide for our growing elementary school and continue a program of quality education and character development for our children, St. Mary's School Board of Directors set in motion plans for a new facility. With space limitations at our First Street location and to strengthen and secure all that St. Mary’s School can be, we expanded our school during Phase I to this new site beginning with 3rd Grade for the 2004-2005 school year. During the 2005-2006 school year, two 2nd Grade classes moved to the Covell Campus. This facility, located on 51 acres, offers programs that best serve our entire school, supporting a program that is well balanced, intellectually stimulating, and academically rigorous. Phase II was completed during the spring of 2006 and opened for all classes for fall 2006. This final move united our entire school at our beautiful Covell campus location. Added in Phase II were nine classrooms, a large multipurpose room with kitchen and physical education space, additional storage and combination bathrooms/safe rooms.
Our 51 acre campus has been developed to include a wide variety of outdoor learning opportunities unique to Edmond or even Oklahoma City. Students are given opportunities to study the environment on the hiking trails covering the native short grass prairie where the school stands today. Alongside the trails are two ponds. One of the ponds has a floating, observation-study dock. The other pond is used for wildlife observation, fishing and even kayaking on occasion. The students begin at age 3, when they are in preschool, to understand and appreciate the animals and plants that live on the property and in this region. As they become older, they begin to understand how interdependent our ecosystems are and how personal responsibility and science play a vital role in preserving God’s creation. This becomes an important platform for teaching science, math and even writing skills. No other school campus can offer students the opportunity to interact with their natural surrounding like St. Mary’s. This past year our school opened the first of its kind outdoor classroom adjacent to Taylor Hall. There students have the opportunity to study math, science, music, fine arts and language arts in an area designed by our teachers to promote interaction with nature. This safe enclosed space is not a playground but rather a bridge from the indoor classroom to our vast 51 acre short grass prairie setting. “Batter up!” can also be heard on our outdoor campus as we have added a fully sodded and irrigated, first class Little League field. St. Mary’s and other community families continue to use our front acres for soccer practice each fall and spring.
Our next phase of campus growth will allow our school to grow older and bigger. Expanding from the northwest wing, we plan to add additional classroom space and evidentially a full sized gymnasium and performance area.
Turning vision into reality…
All successful projects are accomplished not only with leadership and planning, but also through the perseverance and sacrifice of its people. Our school leadership continues to research, establish framework and provide vision. It is always an exciting adventure for St. Mary’s Episcopal School watching vision turn into our reality as we continue to build for our future.
