“For where your treasure is, there will you heart be also” Luke 12:34
St. Mary’s School recognizes its many treasures - its students, both past and present, committed parents and grandparents, friends and volunteers. We also have a beautiful facility, extraordinary faculty and countless individuals in the community that in some way or another, have been touched by the St. Mary’s family.
Since 1977, we have been extremely blessed through our treasured supporters. We know we would not be the school that we are, nor have the things that we have, without individuals who consider SMES worthy of contributions of money, time expertise and energy.
The following pages outline the many ways you can give to St. Mary’s School and frankly, why you should give. Whether you are a returning donor, a SMES alum, a community involved individual, or a business enterprise, there are many reasons why to support St. Mary’s.
Every gift to St. Mary’s represents a time-honored foundation of academic excellence, honor, spiritual growth, responsibility, and mutual respect.
As you review the following pages, know that your rights as a donor are taken seriously. The following page states your rights as a donor. Please review for your information and reassurance.
THANK YOU and WELCOME.
The SMES family truly treasures your association with the school and recognizes that YOU make the difference at St. Mary’s School.

Director of Development
Philanthropy is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the nonprofit organizations and causes they are asked to support, we declare that all donors have these rights:
I. To be informed of the organization's mission, of the way the organization intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
II. To be informed of the identity of those serving on the organization's governing board, and to expect the board to exercise prudent judgment in its stewardship responsibilities.
III. To have access to the organization's most recent financial statements.
IV. To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
V. To receive appropriate acknowledgment and recognition.
VI. To be assured that information about their donation is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
VII. To expect that all relationships with individuals representing organizations of interest to the donor will be professional in nature.
VIII. To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers, employees of the organization or hired solicitors.
IX. To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists that an organization may intend to share.
X. To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.
The Donor Bill of Rights was created by the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP), the Association for Healthcare Philanthropy (AHP), the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE), and the Giving Institute: Leading Consultants to Non-Profits. It has been endorsed by numerous organizations.

This school year, 2012-2013 marks the 25th anniversary of St. Mary’s Annual Beau Geste Auction. Beau Geste, which translates to “a noble or gracious gesture”, began with the idea of a simple wine and cheese party for parents to meet and mingle. At the last minute, Kathy Brown and Nanette Haag decided to add a few auction items believing it would be a good opportunity to raise a little money for the school. The event was held in the parish hall of St. Mary’s Church and cleared $5,000 – a promising surprise by the parent organization and then school director, Susan Radke Craig.
Today, the event has grown to a 300+ person gala, held annually at UCO’s ballroom and typically brings approximately $100,000 for the “Totally Awesome 80’s” is the theme for 2011-2012. Event chairs, Jamie Kalcich and Jaime Schultheis, look forward to leading a fun-filled evening and profitable auction.

4. Corporate Matching Gifts:
Many organizations match charitable gifts of employees. Check with the Human Resources department at your company or your spouse’s company for a matching gift form.
5. Gift to Endowments
Endowments are a permanent savings account for the school. Only the earnings of the endowment or a percentage of the endowment balance is used each year. Endowment gifts can be supplemental funding for essential budget items. Income from an endowment can keep the cost of a St. Mary’s education affordable. SMES has identified endowments as one of the fundraising priorities. If you are interested in creating an endowment named and tailored to your interests, please contact Gayle H. Jones at 405-341-9541 X 124, or email@example.com .
St. Mary’s currently has an endowment, designed to provide regular income to the school once it has reached its principal amount. This amount is determined by the Board of Directors. If you wish to give to the St. Mary’s endowment, simply indicate Endowment in the memo line of your check. Your gift will be deposited into the principal of the fund.
6. Honorariums/Memorial Gifts
Make a gift to honor a loved one or special friend. Birthdays, anniversaries, Christmas, special event or in memory of an individual may all be occasions for a special gift. The donor will receive a gift acknowledgment and notification of the gift will be sent to the individual the donor designates
7. Naming Opportunities
Naming opportunities are available in honor of donors who contribute a significant gift to St. Mary’s School. There are various opportunities to link names with special facilities or programs and each deserve special consideration. To find out more about naming opportunities available at St. Mary’s School and discuss guidelines for leaving a legacy at SMES, please contactGayle H. Jones at 405-341-9541 X 124, or firstname.lastname@example.org .
8. Gift of Real Estate or Art:
Tangible personal property items are fully deductable at their fair market value. Please contact Gayle H. Jones at 405-341-9541 X 124, or email@example.com .
You can support many specific programs or projects by donating restricted funds or giving through Gift-In-Kind. Areas of interest may include art, music, media center, physical wellness and special events.
10. Planned Gifts
While most people think of “planned giving” as a charitable gift made at the time of their death, it is certainly fulfilling to see your gift working while you are alive. In many cases, there may be tax benefits as well. Cash, appreciated securities, a bequest through a will, life insurance, charitable remainder trusts, or annuities, charitable lead trusts, and retained life estates, are all ways to make a planned gift to St. Mary’s School. As with all charitable gifts, donors should consult legal and financial counsel before entering into any agreement.
WHY DOES THE SCHOOL ASK US FOR CONTRIBUTIONS IN ADDITION TO WHAT WE ALREADY SEND TO THE SCHOOL IN TUITION AND FEES?
Tuition does not cover the total cost to educate a student. Charitable gifts raised in support of the Annual Giving Fund, Beau Geste Auction and the Capital Campaign are designed to bridge the financial gap between tuition income and actual operating costs of the school.
WHY DOESN’T THE SCHOOL CHARGE ENOUGH TO COVER OPERATING COSTS?
St. Mary’s School strives to maintain tuition at a level that enables families of every socio-economic level the ability to provide a Christian education for their child while continuing to provide academic excellence.
WHAT ARE THE ST. MARY’S SCHOOL YEARLY GIVING OPPORTUNITIES?
There are many opportunities to support SMES, however the Annual Giving Fund is the major fundraising opportunity of the year and is vital to the annual operating budget. The Annual Giving Fund drive is held during the Fall months of either September or October. Gifts to the Annual Giving Fund are tax deductible. Another important giving opportunity is through support of the Beau Geste auction held in early spring. Funds contributed to the auction are tax deductible over fair market value, or fully tax deductible for gifts which underwrite the event.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ANNUAL FUND AND CAPITAL CAMPAIGN?
Annual Giving Fund is design to offset annual operating expenses. Gifts pledged to the Annual Giving Fund are generally payable at the end of the academic year. Capital campaign drives are conducted to provide significant funds for construction, renovations, or extensive equipment purchases. Contributions made to a capital campaign are generally pledged over three to five years.
WOULD WE BE EXPECTED TO CONTRIBUTE TO BOTH THE ANNUAL FUND AND CAPITAL CAMPAIGN?
We hope all parents, grandparents, and friends prayerfully consider supporting both fundraising efforts to the best of their ability.
CAN WE MAKE A GIFT TO A SPECIFIC PURPOSE?
While the Annual Fund seeks unrestricted gifts, if there is a project you are interested in supporting, please let us know.
DOES SMES APPROACH FOUNDATIONS AND LOCAL BUSINESSES TO SUPPORT THE SCHOOL?
Yes, SMES development efforts include approaching area foundations and local businesses. Many foundations are interested in the initial support received from family, friends, Board of Directors, faculty, and staff. SMES challenges our family and friends to prayerfully consider support of the Annual Fund. It is our desire to have the largest percentage of family and friends participation when foundations are approached.
MAY WE MAKE A CONTRIBUTION OF SOMETHING OTHER THAN CASH?
Yes, there are many ways to support SMES. Please view the “Ways to Give SMES” page located on the Development website for a listing of the many ways you can support SMES.
CAN WE MAKE OF GIFT ANONYMOUSLY?
Yes, when you make your contribution, please note that you would like to be anonymous and we will be happy to honor your request.
MY COMPANY OFFERS A MATCHING GIFT PROGRAM. WOULD THE SCHOOL BE INTERESTED IN THIS PROGRAM?
Yes, matching gifts are an easy way to double your contribution to the school. Please let us know if your company offers this program.
HOW MUCH HAVE OTHERS GIVEN?
The only gift too small is no gift at all. Previous donors have provided for our current student population and current donors will provide for future generations.
IS OUR GIFT TAX-DEDUCTIBLE?
All contributions are fully tax-deductible to the extent of the law. Upon receipt of a gift, a tax receipt is issued for each individual gift.
